Catch Me If You Can
This title sequence was down on a blank screen where the plot of the film has not yet started. 

The title sequence in “Catch Me If You Can” has a very complex design the title sequence is separate form the narrative, and it is cleverly done by showing us what is going to happen in the film, without giving to much away. It lets us, the audience, know that the main character is going to be running from someone who is chasing him, we also know that he is going to change his identity a lot from the change of colours and mise en scene.
The visuals allow us to know when the film is going to be set as well as the Music playing in the background.
The camera angles done at the same angle but vary from close up shots to long shots, the title sequence is a cartoon meaning that we don’t get to see the characters yet.
The tiltes themself are white but the colour of the background changes giving them different effects.
 


Shark Tale
this title sequence is done so that the titles are over the screenplay as the film continues with the story line. 

The title sequence in Shark Tale has the Jaws theme tune in the back to let us, the audience know that sharks are the bad guy in this film.
The camera angles are mostly wide shots to let you know that the film is set under water and some close ups to emphasise the fact we're under water, e.g the worm, and the buoy.
The visual effects is obviously its a cartoon.
The titles themselves are a simple block yellow, apart from the title which had a red outline.
The main colour through out is blue.

From the titles we find out that; it'd a Dreamworks animation production, and the main actors are; Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Renee Zellweger, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Martin Scorsese.



She's The Man
This title sequence is done where the screenplay stops to show you the titles, and then the plot continues after each title. 

She's the man titles have an upbeat song in the background "Cant stop this feeling" which lets us as the audience know that the film is going to be upbeat.
Camera angles used are a lot of low shots, so that we can see the football, and when the goals are scored. Majority of shots are wide to shoe the setting and locations.
The visual effects are the fact that everything on the screen when the titles appear turns a red tint.
The titles themselves are a simple block writing. The writing is white making it even more simple.
Colours are bright.

From the titles we find out that; it's Dreamworks Picture and Lakeshore entertainment, and Donners company production. The actors are; Amanda Byrnes, Channing Tatum, Laura Ramsey, Vinnie Jones, David Cross, Julie Hagerty, Robert Hoffman, Alex Breckenridge, Jessica Lucas, Jonathan Sadowski, Robert Torti, James Snyder, Amanda Crew.
It then tells us who the casting, additional casting, music,costume designer, editor, production design, director of photography, executive producers, producer, screenplay, music supervisor, story, and who it was directed by.

4 Golden Questions

1) Who is the target audience of the text?

You need to know this so that you know what sort of things to include in the film for example you are not going to have a film aimed at 4 year old's with lots of death and blood, same as your not going to have a film for 18 year old's with bunny's. 

To know this you would do; surveys, look at websites, statistics/demographics, similar texts, and the BBFC ratings (12A,15,18) 

2) What does the audience expect form the text?

If the film is a comedy the audience expect to laugh, similarly if its a horror they expect death. 

To know this you would look at; genre conventions, and do some questionnaires and/or surveys. 

3) How does the text appeal to or cater to the target audience?

A film for young children (0-10) is going to have  a very basic story line, with lots of bright colours.

To know this you would look at textual analysis. 

4) To what extent does the target audience feel the text is successful in targeting them?

If the film was a horror and the audience believe there was not enough death then, they may feel that it was targeting younger people. Or if the child's film with rating U was to swear in it they may believe that it was not of the right rating. 

To know if it did succeed then you would look at; audience research, questionnaires, surveys, and focus groups.

Genre Research
'P.S I Love You'

Question 1) This film is aimed at young adults due to the BBFC rating of an 12A. The film is also a romance film meaning there aren't going to be any scary scenes and possibly disturbing ones.
I believe the target audience is 15-24 year old's, even thought there is a BBFC rating of 12A, I don't think that 12-14 year old's will still be as intrigued as older watchers.

Question 2) Audience would expect to feel good about themselves and for the couple to either fall in love or to realise why they were in love. Also they expact the film to be upbeat and not scary, they expect to either be made to cry or made to feel that love can conqure anything.

Question 3) This caters to the audience as the characters are young and people who watch can relate to it. It makes them feel good about themselves and makes them feel good about love, also the main male character is good looking and has an appealing accent which attracts female attention

Question 4) As someone in the target audience I feel that it was successful in targeting me as it was self aware of what type of genre it was which made me want to watch it as well as wanting to watch it because Gerard Butler was in it.

Characterisation

She's The Man

The main characters name is Viola, we know this thorough the action code of someone saying it. Form the opening shots we know she’s good at football this is obvious form the goals she scores and the way everyone else plays the game with her, also the celebration dances that they do. We can tell by the crowd of people around her that she is popular, and isn’t shy. We can tell that she’s confident as she’s talking to everyone and interacting with others.
Also the fact that she’s very athletic, leads us to believe that she is also very good at sports. We can also tell that she is a typical teen by the way she acts and looks.
When the football team is cut we can tell that she cares an awful lot about sports as she is upset and wants to do anything to make it stay. Also we can tall that when she believes strongly about something she will do anything to get it, so she stands up for her beliefs. 

We then see her being mistaken for her brother showing that she is very boyish and looks like him, also the way she dresses is very boyish.
The scene with her mother trying to convince her to be more feminine further supports the fact that she is very ‘boyish’. Her reaction to the dress also shows this.

We can also see that she is embarrassed by her family, and that she doesn’t openly let people met them.
We also get to see the contrast between her character and the character of Monique, where she is very boyish and Monique is very girly.

The start of the film we start with a girl sleeping in bed the music is very calm, leading us to the enigma codes of, why is she sleeping, who is she, and should she be awake?
We then see her waking up saying “Oh sh**” Letting us know that she is supposed to be awake. Which makes us think of the Enigma code what is she late for?
She then points to a date on a calendar which is marked with an explosion which lets us know that something bad is happening today, what is this bad thing, and what is happening today? 

We then see a girl making breakfast, so we wonder who she is. The following action codes allow us to know who she is and what her relation to the blonde girl are.
The blonde girl addresses the other girl as “Molly” so we know her name, she then goes on to say “Earth calling sisterling” letting us know that they are sisters. “Today’s the day Rosemary moves in” making us wonder who is Rosemary, why does it matter that she’s moving in and why doesn’t she like her?

Molly then says “Please tell me you’re not going to do anything crazy?” Which makes us think does she normally? Why would she?
We then find out that Molly is the other girl’s younger sister as she says “Way too young”, Molly then says the girl’s name “Poppy” so we know her name.
When the moving truck arrives we Poppy starts talking about her “dads girlfriend” so we know who Rosemary is. But we are left with the enigma code where her mum is? Why doesn’t she like her Rosemary?
She then says “help yourself” which leads to the action code of all the people there taking the clothes and other bits.
Molly then says “You’ve done it this time” making us wonder has she done something like this before. And is she going to get in trouble, with who.
“Watch this girls” all of them watch her then we see her jump off the edge. Leaving us with the enigma code; is she going to be okay?
Then a older looking man comes in to view and everyone goes quiet making us wonder who he is. He then says “Get up here now” making us wonder why he’d listen to him.

Typical Romance:

The typical conventions of a romance are; two people meet and either fall in love or are brought together by something terrible. Throughout the film we are meant to be wondering “are they going to get together?” or “they so belong together”.
Also the characters are meant to make us feel better about ourselves or optimistic about ‘love’.
There are generally two main characters that fall in love but we then have their close friends who we also get to know as they often give advice on the couple’s relationship.
The setting of the movies are often light and normally create an upbeat mood, and make sure that while people are watching they feel good.

Analysis of a Romance:

In the film The Proposal they start the film with the typical upbeat white font on the screen of the narrative, with the up-tempo music, creating a happy mood. To add to this mood with have bright settings and sunny scenes. The take’s are long and do not cut quickly from on e to another making it a softer film to watch. The majorities of the shot are mid shots from normal angle. This is to make the film and the characters look normal and make the audience think that this may happen.
We are introduced to the characters who we have the man who is the more ‘normal’ character and the woman as the more ‘controlling’ character. The shots allow us as the audience to know that they are eventually going to ‘get together’.
We are introduced to the problem of how the woman is an illegal immigrant and needs a visa; this is the ‘obstacle’ the couple most overcome, which brings them together.

Narrative Structure

Equilibrium is something that's balanced, such as normality, every day life.
Disequilibrium is when things are out of balance, and the normality is gone or disrupted. 


The story normally goes from equilibrium to disequilibrium and then when the "hero" saves the day things go back to equilibrium.

Enigma Codes & Action Codes

An enigma code is a question that is posed by the actions/events/characters which is then answered by the narrative. For example, who is she?
An action code is the event or moment in a film narrative that then motivates the action in a certain direction eg. a phone call.

The start of the film we see a woman climbing up a rope, this is an active code as it shows us that’s she’s athletic and that she needs to climb this rope to get somewhere it also leaves us wondering why, she’s climbing the rope? Also we want to know where she is.

She then starts to run, which leaves us with enigma codes, why? What is she doing? And where is she running to? The next action code allows us to know that she is actually taking part in an obstacle course and she is in training for something as the fact that she’s climbing over a net, tells us this. But we then are left questioning what is she training for? 

When the officer comes over to her, we then find out her name as he is calling it but we only know her last name, he then tells her that someone wants to see her. This is an important action code as it allows us to know that if he hadn’t have said it she would have carried on her normal day and her equilibrium wouldn’t have been changed. The enigma codes are; what does he need her for? Who is he?

The next action code is a subtle one of him having FBI written on his cap, this is directly telling us that she is part of the FBI as is he. 

We then see other people training – another action code - this is telling us that others, and everyone else is wearing a uniform apart from her which makes us wonder why isn’t she wearing a uniform?

When she’s in the building we see her high five someone this is important as the other woman says her name, allowing us to know a bit more about her and the fact that she is sociable. The questions we have are who is this other girl? 

When she enters the lift we see that everyone else is a man and wearing red, this leads us to believe that she may be challenged about her abilities due to her gender. You have to think why she is the only woman in the lift, also what effect is this going to have on the plot and possibly the character herself. 

When she exits the lift we get a close up of a sign saying “Behavioural Science” this makes us wonder if she has behavioural problems, it also allows us to know what Crawford studies. 

The next action code is that of her looking for Crawford and a man telling her to wait in his office, if this had not of happened she wouldn’t have seen the board with all the girls on it. 

Also this first action code leads us to another enigma code, wondering where Crawford is now?

Then when she gets into the office we see her looking at something, we don’t see what this is, we just get to see her reaction this makes us wonder why she’s so upset, and want to know what she’s looking at.
